Tiny Desk AI Song: “Outstanding” and the Original Performance

If you mean the “Outstanding” version of the Tiny Desk AI trend, the song is “Outstanding” by The Gap Band. The live performance to look for is Charlie Wilson’s Tiny Desk Concert, published by NPR Music on June 5, 2023, with “Outstanding” closing the set. Start with NPR Music’s original video if you want to hear the performance behind the edits.

“Tiny Desk AI” describes an AI remake of a desk-side performance, rather than the title of a new song. Different people appear as the singer and band. A clip made with AI is not footage of those people actually performing at NPR.

The song, the concert and the AI edits

There are three things to separate when searching for the original:

  • The song: 1982. “Outstanding” appears on The Gap Band’s album The Gap Band IV. Apple Music’s track listing dates it to May 17, 1982. Choose that recording if you want the studio version.
  • The live concert: June 5, 2023. Charlie Wilson performed it for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series. Bobby Carter’s NPR concert notes, republished by Georgia Public Broadcasting, list it as the final song and credit Wilson on vocals. That is the original concert, with a real band.
  • The AI remake. This puts a new cast into a desk-concert scene. “Tiny Desk AI,” “Outstanding Tiny Desk AI” and “Tiny Desk AI meme” can describe this kind of edit, but an upload using those words is not necessarily the same cut or recording.
